Is music a way of communicating something on a higher level or some thing we just listen to?

Recently I’ve been noticing the difference between people who listen to music, and people who hear music but don’t really listen to it, for me personally music can be almost spiritual, the combinations of notes, rhythm and well placed lyrics can change my perspective on a situation let alone my emotional state, and it totally amazes me that people don’t even hear or listen to the lyrics in a song??

Ok if you want to listen to brainless trash I have no problem hey I’m a fan of tat myself. But listening to something where the artist has tried to convey something slightly more meaningful is worth paying attention for surely? The music I listen to at any one time is usually attributed to how I feel and having a connection to the artist make me feel I’m not alone in feeling that? Seems to me most people have music as something that is put in the place of silence but is over looked as such, to me thats a huge shame, it's waste of the gift of hearing.
